Coping With X-Wing 2.0 Adjustment Disorder…

I’m really excited with the recent announcement by Fantasy Flight Game (FFG) of X-Wing 2.0. I’m hoping it’s going to fix what needs fixing and clean up what has gone from a streamlined quick play game to a bloated game requiring regular rule checks. Reading all the news though, I found that many people have suddenly found themselves feeling anxious, angry and upset. X-Wing Adjustment Disorder (X-WAD). There’s even been some self-harm by spikey Tie-Interceptor, and others who have pitched themselves back into the age-old mystery of trying to understand the point of crit tokens. I find fandom generally is so toxic these days, like any change is intolerable, and the toxicity of fandom has become so much easier to voice thanks to the Internet of outrage as it seems to have become. So I thought I would toss out some positivity for a game I love… and as a trained therapist and author of the self-help book, ‘Get Over It’, I can’t just sit here with all the XWAD suffering I’ve witnessed on social media, so after the mad Tusken Raider and hyper-jump below I’m wading into the despair to triage the most common cries of anguish…

Star Wars Armada Imperial Repaints…

BEYOND THE WRITING DESK_opt (1)Having bought the heck out of Fantasy Flight Games’ X-wing, the epic scale hinted at the awesomeness of playing a game with capital ships. Then ‘Star Wars: Armada’ was announced and the circle was complete. Armada is a great game with great miniatures. But I found the lack of the titular ‘armada’ disturbing and the paint job of the Imperial ships displeasing. They’re as grey and drab as they are weathered looking–not the bold gleaming ships of the movies. While the first criticism of the game can be overcome by increasing the point limit, the ships involved more consideration. I think I was in my teens when I last painted a miniature. I was only a learner–and certainly not a master. I’m also a perfectionist, so if I I failed me I would not be as forgiving as I might need to be for my 40 year old hands. I didn’t want the Empire’s prize ruined. Dare I repaint them? If they could be turned, they could look like the powerful playing pieces they should be. Seeing the bright white star destroyer in the trailer for ‘Rogue One’ was a new way to motivate me, and I decided I would deal with them myself…

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (SPOILER FREE)…

image

I will keep this simple. I loved this film. Within the first 20 minutes I was swept up by the continuation of Star Wars. I had fallen in love with a droid, found the First Order menacing, was on board with the fun, enjoying the action and rooting for the heroes who had been introduced to us.

Star Wars: Rebellion by Fantasy Flight Games (or why I will have less money in 2016…)

star-wars-rebellionSome people despair at their financial situation. Many blame their kids, their government, or even immigrants. If I were to join those in scapegoating, then I guess I would have to blame Fantasy Flight Games. With my shelves loaded with ‘Eldritch Horror’, ‘Elder Signs’, ‘Star Wars: X-wing’, ‘Star Wars: Armada’ games, expansions and accessories, Fantasy Flight Games are now releasing a board game: ‘Star Wars: Rebellion’. Seriously, Fantasy Flight, just ask me to invest in your company. I already feel like I should have shares in you. I have 0 idea what this game is going to be like, but I know I want it. I’m think it’ll be a cross between ‘Risk’ and ‘Eldritch Horror’. Which would be epic.

Star Wars Armada by Fantasy Flight Games…

Armada

This is a two-player game of fleet battles. Upping the scale from Fantasy Flight’s fighter game of X-Wing miniatures to the big hulking capital ships. Or, as I think of this game; a ‘big box of awesome’. And it is a very big box. But is it awesome? Well, I’ll tell you what I thought from my out of the box play…

Star Wars ‘The Force Awakens’ 2nd Trailer Drops…

I have goosebumps on my goosebumps.

There is so much about the look and style of this film that feels just right. This looks like it could truly be a continuation of the films I fell in love with 3# years ago and set me on a path to the geek side.

And I was trying not to get too excited…
